Meet the 2018 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab SR5 4WD

The Mid‑Size Pickup That Doesn’t Compromise

The 2018 Toyota Tacoma SR5 Double Cab with four‑wheel drive and the potent 3.5 L V6 engine delivers an unmatched blend of rugged performance, everyday versatility, and legendary Toyota quality. Designed for both active lifestyles and demanding work, this Tacoma stands ready to go wherever your journey leads.

⚙️ Power & Performance That Goes the Distance

At the heart of the SR5 sits a time‑tested 3.5‑liter DOHC V6 engine, generating 278 hp at 6,000 rpm and 265 lb‑ft of torque at 4,600 rpm, mated to your choice of a 6‑speed manual or smooth automatic transmission

The SR5’s four‑wheel drive system provides solid traction and control on snow, dirt roads, or slippery terrain. With the optional Tow Prep package, this configuration achieves up to 6,400 lb of towing capacity, beginning with the Double Cab short‑bed setup, and up to 6,500 lbs in similar 4WD versions

Fuel economy balances performance sensibly: the automatic‑equipped 4WD model sips at approximately 18 mpg city / 22 mpg highway / 20 mpg combined, offering confidence for longer drives

    🧭 Hauling & Payload Strength

With a curb weight near 4,425 lb and a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of approximately 5,600 lb, the Tacoma SR5 4WD short‑bed double cab offers a cargo payload of around 1,175 lb  This capacity is ideal for hauling tools, gear, or recreational equipment while still accommodating passengers.

Whether towing boats, trailers, or motorcycles, Tacoma owners report effective real‑world performance—even on longer trips. A popular Reddit owner towed a Mazda CX‑3 (about 2,150 lb) plus trailer (~4,300 lb) at a steady 60 mph, averaging around 15–16 mpg and noting it “handled like a dream”

    🪑 Comfortable & Practical Interior

The Double Cab configuration seats up to five comfortably, with well‑proportioned space:

    • Front headroom: 39.7 in / legroom: 42.9 in
    • Rear headroom: 38.3 in / legroom: 32.6 in
    • Shoulder room: ≈58 in front and back

SR5 trim includes a cloth-trim interior, supportive bucket front seats, manual lumbar adjustment, and a folding 60/40 rear bench seat with under-seat storage. Cabin layout emphasizes function, with accessible controls and durable materials meant to endure every task.

🌐 Technology & Connectivity Where It Counts

The SR5 comes standard with Toyota’s Entune multimedia system:

    • 6.1‑inch touchscreen, Bluetooth audio/phone streaming, USB input, and rearview camera
    • Available 7‑inch high‑resolution screen and Entune Premium Audio on higher trims or option packages
    • Options for JBL premium audio, digital multi-information display, and smart key with push-button start on higher trims

Though Tacoma doesn’t chase luxury, its tech suite supports connectivity with ease and reliability, perfect for drivers who want functionality without wild complexity.

    🛡 Safety Built for Adventure

Standard Toyota Safety Sense‑P (TSS‑P) equips the Tacoma SR5 with a full range of driver‑assist technologies:

    • Pre‑collision system with pedestrian detection
    • Lane departure alert with sway warning
    • Automatic high beams
    • Dynamic radar cruise control
    • Rearview camera and Toyota’s Star Safety System (which includes ABS, traction control, brake assist, and vehicle stability control)

The 2018 Tacoma scored four out of five stars from NHTSA, while IIHS crashworthiness ratings remained favorable for the prior-year model, though front-small-overlap and headlight testing was still pending at the time

    🌄 Rugged Design & Real‑World Versatility

Tacoma’s heritage is clear in every detail. With a ground clearance of about 9.4 inches, advanced double-wishbone front and leaf‑spring rear suspension, and a turning diameter of 40.6 ft, it thrives in tight trails and city streets alike

Available exterior options such as fog lamps, aluminum wheels, running boards, tonneau covers, roof racks, and bed accessories allow owners to tailor the build for work, adventure, or hauling lifestyle needs

Engineered for reassurance, Tacoma’s construction and mechanical reliability make it a smart choice—expected to hold value better than nearly any rival in its class

🧭 Voice of Owners: Real‑World Insight

Tacoma SR5 V6 owners often praise its rugged simplicity. One long‑haul user towed over 4,300 lb and reported steady performance and fuel usage of 15–16 mpg at cruise, saying,…

    “Handles like a dream.”

But many also mention transmission quirks:

“The 6‑speed automatic can be frustrating… it hunts for gears, especially uphill.” Engaging the ECT power mode helps by holding gears longer and keeping the revs steady for more predictable performance

Payload limits are real: a crew‑cab 4×4 configuration typically offers about 940–1,175 lb, which can be approached quickly when loaded with passengers and gear. Many users recommend staying well below the maximum payload to preserve braking and suspension longevity

    • It was a great truck..... Wasn't in love though

My Fully Loaded Black Tacoma TRD Off Road Double Cab was a great, dependable truck. I have zero complaints on the look, the handling in the snow, the JBL sound system was awesome, it was comfortable in the front, but a little tight in the back. My biggest complaint about it over all is the V6 is very very underwhelming. The lack of power really kept me from keeping it because I loved the way it looked. It was the first year of the new design and I bought it brand new off the show room floor with all the bells and whistles. Tacoma's especially in CO, sell for a premium. I lost $8k in 4 years buying it brand new. I can't ask for anything else out of any vehicle when it comes to resale value and will continue to buy Toyota's for this very reason moving forward. I just couldn't stand how sluggish it was on the highway trying to get up to speed and forget about passing anybody without taxing the RPM's. It's a truck, I completely understand this but I may as well of been driving a 4 cylinder compact in comparison. Towing wasn't a problem, no real difference in performance, but I also never tried to tow a real heavy load with it. You buy this truck to Off-Road in the hills and to be honest, I was afraid too. I couldn't stand the thought of potentially damaging anything on the rocks in the Mountains so, I never really pushed its limits in that regard. What I did do, it handled with ease. Not sure I would buy another one, I think I would probably do a V8 Tundra next time.

    • Truck has been solid overall since purchase date.

Purchased a newToyota Tacoma TRD Off Road in October of 2018 and have not had any major or minor mechanical, technical or body issues. There have been two recalls, one has been fixed, but they have not resulted in issues with the truck. I have owned Toyota cars for the last 24 years and feel just as confident in this truck as I have with the other cars/trucks that I have owned. The transmission does hunt for the low gear on the highway but I don't find that it affects my enjoyment of driving the vehicle, and I like the 21-22 average mpg I am getting. I also tow a tent trailer and the truck does fine and the engine and transmission have performed great. No complaints thus far.
